JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Imaging Intern will assist imaging department staff with non-clinical support activities that contribute to the efficient operation of the department. Student interns will help organize materials, prepare administrative documents, support patient flow processes, maintain department resources, and observe diagnostic imaging workflows.

Medical Imaging Interns will gain exposure to healthcare technology, diagnostic imaging services, patient support operations, and healthcare administration while exploring careers in radiology, medical imaging, healthcare technology, and patient care services.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Watts Healthcare Center Summer Internship Program provides high school students with hands-on career exploration opportunities within a professional healthcare environment. Interns will work alongside experienced healthcare professionals while learning workplace expectations, communication skills, and industry-specific practices.

This position is designed to connect students to Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways while developing skills in healthcare operations, technology, customer service, communication, organization, and professional workplace readiness.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Interns will learn to:

• Develop professional communication and workplace skills.

• Understand the role of medical imaging in patient diagnosis and treatment.

• Learn how healthcare technology supports patient care.

• Build organizational and administrative support skills.

• Observe patient scheduling, workflow coordination, and department operations.

• Explore careers in radiology, diagnostic imaging, healthcare technology, and healthcare administration.

• Practice professionalism, teamwork, and workplace accountability.

• Connect workplace experiences to Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways and future career opportunities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Imaging Department Support

• Assist staff with organizing department materials and resources.

• Help prepare non-clinical materials needed for daily operations.

• Support staff with maintaining organized work areas.

• Observe imaging department workflows and operational processes.

Patient Services Support

• Welcome patients and visitors to the imaging department.

• Assist staff with directing patients to appropriate waiting areas.

• Help provide general department information to patients and families.

• Support positive patient experiences through professional customer service.

Scheduling & Administrative Support

• Assist with organizing appointment-related materials.

• Support data entry and administrative documentation projects.

• Help prepare departmental reports and filing systems.

• Assist with scanning, copying, and organizing records.

Technology & Equipment Awareness

• Observe the use of imaging technology and equipment.

• Learn how diagnostic imaging supports healthcare providers.

• Gain awareness of safety procedures and equipment standards.

• Participate in educational discussions regarding healthcare technology careers.

Career Exploration & Professional Development

• Participate in workplace learning experiences and career readiness activities.

• Learn about educational pathways leading to imaging and healthcare careers.

• Observe professionals working in diagnostic imaging environments.

• Develop communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Quality & Safety Awareness

• Learn the importance of patient privacy and confidentiality.

• Follow workplace safety procedures and department protocols.

• Participate in discussions regarding quality healthcare services and patient-centered care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently enrolled in Compton Unified School District.

• Preferred Sophomore or Junior standing.

• Preferred CTE pathway student or rising CTE pathway student.

• Interest in healthcare, science, biotechnology, or public health careers.

• Demonstrates responsibility, professionalism, and dependability.

• Strong communication and organizational skills.

• Positive attitude and willingness to learn.

• Ability to work collaboratively with staff and peers.
  

Prior to internship start date, selected students will need to demonstrate:

• CPR Certification

• Current TB Clearance (within the last 6 months):

  • TB Skin Test (PPD), or

  • TB QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) blood test

• Chest X-ray (required only for students with a history of a positive PPD or QuantiFERON-TB Gold test; must be completed within the last year)

• Immune Titers:

  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) IgG

  • Varicella (Chickenpox) IgG

  • Hepatitis B Surface Antibody

• Immunization Records:

• Tdap

• COVID-19 vaccination (until further notice)

• Current seasonal influenza (flu) vaccination

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Student interns will work within designated administrative and support areas of the Medical Imaging Department at Watts Healthcare Center. Interns may spend time in office, reception, scheduling, and imaging support environments while observing healthcare operations. Duties may include standing, walking, organizing materials, operating basic office equipment, and interacting with patients and staff. All interns will work under the supervision of imaging department personnel and must adhere to workplace safety, confidentiality, and professional conduct standards.
