High School Internship | Summer 2026| VVWRA - Maintenance Mechanic - 100 hours

Type: Paid Internship for High School students-must be enrolled in high school
Schedule: 100 hours, 2 days per week, June 1, 2026-July 23, 2026
Overview
Join a leading environmental services organization and gain hands-on experience in water and wastewater utility operations. This summer internship offers the opportunity to explore careers in environmental services through supervised, safety-focused technical tasks.
Interns will work alongside skilled professionals to support mechanical maintenance, equipment readiness, site inspections, and stormwater management. Through this role, students will build foundational knowledge in environmental systems, preventative care, and utility operations.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Equipment Readiness
Inventory and inspect safety gear (gas sniffers, PPE, gloves, etc.)
Assemble and organize PPE kits for field tasks
Shadow toolbox talks and job hazard analyses
Mechanical Maintenance Support
Assist with routine tasks such as oil changes, filter cleanings, and greasing
Support pump teardown, part replacement, and drying bed maintenance
Prepare work areas and retrieve tools and equipment for service jobs
Field Operations – Collections & Equipment
Help prep work vehicles with tools and safety gear
Tag along with crews during system inspections and cleaning
Observe operations involving cranes, vac trucks, and SCADA systems
Site Inspection & Logistics
Assist in staging equipment for sewer or industrial site inspections
Support CCTV operations including camera setup and cable handling
Help log inspection notes and organize footage and documentation
Stormwater & Drainage Monitoring
Document field conditions during storm drain inspections
Learn how to spot drainage issues and understand inspection protocols
Assist with recording and organizing data for reports
Learning Objectives
Gain real-world insight into water and wastewater systems
Learn safe practices for utility fieldwork
Develop skills in mechanical maintenance and environmental monitoring
Understand how utility departments contribute to public health and sustainability
Qualifications
Interest in mechanical work, environmental science, or utilities
Able to follow safety protocols and take direction from supervisors
Willingness to work outdoors in varied conditions
Must be able to obtain work permit
