Description
This role requires diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of equipment and vehicles, including forklifts, trailers, and light-, medium-, and heavy-duty gas, propane, and diesel-fueled units. The ideal candidate will possess strong diagnostic abilities, mechanical expertise, and the ability to develop effective repair methods. In addition to repairs, the mechanic will also carry out preventive maintenance measures to ensure reliability, minimize downtime, and prevent recurring issues. This position may involve shop work as well as field service calls for emergency breakdowns.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) and ensure compliance with DOT and company safety standards.
- Read and interpret work orders, service requests, and technical manuals to determine required tasks.
- Conduct thorough diagnostic tests on gas, propane, and diesel engines, electric motors, and transmissions, and analyze results to recommend effective solutions.
- Inspect and service a wide range of vehicle systems, including:
- Suspension and steering systems
- Exhaust and emissions systems
- Drive axles and differentials
- Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Brake systems (air, disc, drum)
- Electrical and electronic control systems
- Lifting systems (forklifts, lift gates, etc.)
- Trailer body structures and tires
- Respond to emergency breakdowns in the field; perform troubleshooting and on-site repairs when necessary.
- Repair, adjust, or replace defective components such as transmissions, clutches, brakes, engines, tires, and related parts.
- Perform routine maintenance services, including oil changes, brake replacements, filter changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks.
- Conduct test drives and operational checks to confirm successful repairs and verify performance standards.
- Ensure that all equipment, tractors, and trailers meet U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and company safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate service records, inspection logs, and repair documentation for compliance and reporting purposes.
- Utilize hand tools, power tools, hoists, jacks, diagnostic software, and other specialized equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Support shop operations by maintaining cleanliness, organizing tools, and ensuring a safe working environment.
- Provide input on parts ordering, inventory management, and repair scheduling when needed.
Requirements & Skills
- Proven work experience as a mechanic, preferably with exposure to fleet vehicles and material handling equipment.
- Hands-on experience with diagnostic software and equipment (e.g., J-Pro, DiagnosticLink, Cummins Insite, Cat ET, etc.).
- Solid understanding of gas, propane, and diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, and drivetrains.
- Ability to work in varied conditions, including hot, cold, and outdoor environments.
- Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as within a team.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with a logical, methodical approach.
- High attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality standards.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred but not mandatory.
- Basic computer literacy for accessing manuals, logging repairs, and operating diagnostic tools.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly.
- Physical stamina and strength to lift heavy components and perform physically demanding work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with fleet maintenance or transportation/logistics operations.
- Welding, fabrication, or machining skills a plus.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance scheduling and recordkeeping.
